Aisha Wahab Leads California Congressional Race with 58.5% of Early Votes

Afghan-American politician Aisha Wahab has won California’s 14th Congressional District election, securing a full two-year term in the US House of Representatives.

According to the latest reported results, Wahab received 57.1 per cent of the vote, defeating fellow Democratic candidate Melissa Hernandez, who received 42.9 per cent. All 351 precincts have reported their results, although official certification is still pending.

The election attracted national attention following a closely contested campaign, including controversy over outside political spending and criticism surrounding Wahab’s position on diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan.

Wahab previously entered Congress after winning the district’s August special election. Her latest victory extends her representation of the East Bay district through the next congressional term.
