Beaconsfield Mine Disaster Survivor Todd Russell to Spend Final Days with Family

Todd Russell, one of the two miners who survived the 2006 Beaconsfield mine disaster in Tasmania, is preparing to spend his remaining days with his family following a prolonged health battle.

According to 7NEWS, the 54-year-old is leaving hospital after eight and a half months of treatment, with doctors indicating that no further treatment options are available.

Russell and fellow miner Brant Webb made international headlines in 2006 after surviving 14 days trapped underground following a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine. Their colleague, Larry Knight, died in the disaster.

Their rescue on May 9, 2006, became one of Australia’s most widely remembered mining rescue operations.

Russell’s latest health battle has renewed public attention on the survivor and the lasting impact of the disaster.
