Afghanistan Needs Practical Action to Ensure Justice and Accountability

Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has called for concrete international action to ensure justice and accountability for the people of Afghanistan.

In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, Faiq said he had emphasised the importance of justice for Afghanistan during a UN General Assembly meeting discussing the report of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He called for the enforcement of four arrest warrants issued against senior Taliban officials, stressing the need to protect victims, preserve evidence and prevent retaliation against those seeking justice.

Faiq also warned that international engagement with the Taliban must not come at the cost of overlooking repression or allowing those responsible for abuses to escape accountability.

He further stressed that Afghanistan needs an inclusive, Afghan-led political process supported by the United Nations, one that reflects the rights and aspirations of the Afghan people.

“Without justice, lasting peace in Afghanistan is impossible,” Faiq emphasised, adding that accountability without practical action has no credibility.

His remarks come amid continuing concerns over human rights violations and the lack of accountability in Afghanistan, particularly regarding restrictions on women and girls and other fundamental freedoms.
