Britain Reopens Debate Over Future With EU
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reopened the debate over Britain’s long-term relationship with the European Union, saying the government will consider a range of options, including closer ties or eventually rejoining the bloc.
Burnham said Britain could remain outside the EU, seek closer links through the single market or customs union, or go further and seek to rejoin the EU. He said each option would need to be examined for its practical consequences and advantages.
The Independent media argued in an editorial that returning closer to Europe would be beneficial for Britain, while noting that the process would face significant political and practical challenges.
The debate comes a decade after the Brexit referendum and as the UK government reviews its future relationship with the EU, including trade, economic cooperation and movement between Britain and European countries.
