AI Scam Uses Fake Doctor Calls to Target Mandarin-Speaking Victims in Victoria
Scammers are using artificial intelligence to imitate doctors’ voices and target Mandarin-speaking people in Victoria, police have warned.
ABC News reported that Victoria Police received 10 reports of the scam in September. In one case, a victim lost $50,000 after being told by someone using the voice of a medical professional to buy gift cards. Another victim lost $40,000 after a scammer posing as a medical professional repeatedly pressured them to buy more gift cards.
Police said the scammers use victims’ real names to make the calls appear genuine and may imitate doctors, general practitioners and surgeons using AI voice cloning.
Victoria Police has advised people not to provide money, gift-card codes or personal information during unexpected calls and to contact their doctor or clinic directly using an official phone number.
