National Rally Makes Historic Gains in France’s Senate
Bareen Media – The Guardian reports that Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) and its allies won a record 14 seats in France’s partial Senate elections, giving the party enough seats to form a Senate group for the first time.
The results add to the party’s presence in France’s upper house ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Nine RN candidates won seats in Sunday’s vote, adding to three existing RN senators, while two seats went to the party’s ally, Éric Ciotti’s Union of the Right for the Republic.
France’s 348-seat Senate remains dominated by traditional right and centre-right parties. The Senate uses an indirect voting system in which local elected officials, including mayors and councillors, choose senators.
The Guardian says the result gives the National Rally greater visibility and parliamentary resources as France moves toward its next presidential election.
