Canada’s Population Growth Falls to Its Lowest Level in More Than a Century

Bareen Media – CBC News reports that Canada’s population growth has fallen to its lowest level in more than a century, following a sharp slowdown in international migration.

According to Statistics Canada, the country’s population reached about 41.8 million on July 1, 2026. The population grew by roughly 189,000 people, or 0.5 percent, over the previous year.

Statistics Canada says the slower growth is largely linked to a decline in international migration. The number of temporary residents also fell significantly compared with previous years.

Canada recorded much faster population growth in 2023–24, when the annual rate reached 2.8 percent. The latest figures therefore show a substantial change in the pace of population growth.

CBC News said the new figures provide an indication of the impact of recent changes to Canada’s immigration and temporary-resident policies on population trends.
