New UN warning: Afghan women and girls continue to face severe restrictions

At the latest UN Security Council briefing on Afghanistan, the UN warned that severe restrictions on women and girls continue.

The UN highlighted the continued exclusion of women and girls from education, employment, and public life. It also warned that restrictions on Afghan women working for the UN are making it more difficult to deliver humanitarian assistance effectively to women and girls.

According to the briefing, nearly 75% of Afghan women-led organisations experienced funding cuts over the past year, while more than 80% reported increasing needs among women and girls.

The UN has again called for all restrictions on women and girls to be lifted and for the international community to keep their rights and protection a priority. Afghan women and girls need more than statements. They need sustained, practical, and meaningful international support.
