US Judge Temporarily Halts Deportation of More Than 150 Afghan Migrants
A federal judge in New York has temporarily blocked the deportation of more than 150 Afghan migrants from the United States, following concerns over their safety if returned to Afghanistan through Pakistan.
US District Judge Valerie Caproni issued the order on Tuesday, November 3, preventing deportations to Afghanistan or Pakistan until Saturday, November 07.
The decision came after 66 members of the US Congress and refugee advocacy organisations raised concerns about the planned removals. Some of the Afghans facing deportation reportedly include former members of Afghan security forces and relatives of individuals who worked alongside US forces.
The US government told the court that no deportation flights to Afghanistan or Pakistan were planned or confirmed for the remainder of the week.
However, the court’s order is temporary, and the future of the affected Afghan migrants remains uncertain.
