Afghan Cinema in Australia Offers a New Perspective on Afghanistan

Bareen – The 11th edition of the Afghan International Film Festival has opened in Adelaide, Australia, bringing Afghan cinema, culture, and human stories to Australian audiences.

The opening ceremony was attended by members of parliament, local Australian officials, Afghan artists, filmmakers, and members of the Afghan community.

Festival organiser Fahim Hashemi said the event was launched 11 years ago with the aim of bringing Afghan stories and voices to international audiences.

Despite ongoing restrictions on arts and cinema in Afghanistan, Afghan filmmakers continue to produce films that document the experiences and lives of Afghan people.

Hashemi said the festival aims to present Afghanistan through more than stories of war and conflict. It also highlights themes of love, hope, culture, resilience, and everyday life.

He described cinema as a powerful way to bring different communities together in Australia and said cultural events such as the festival can strengthen understanding between migrant communities and Australian society.

Following Adelaide, the festival is scheduled to continue in Sydney on 3 October, with the closing ceremony to be held in Melbourne.

Through cinema and human storytelling, the Afghan International Film Festival provides an opportunity for audiences outside Afghanistan to discover different dimensions of Afghan culture, identity, and everyday life.
