UN Support for Agriculture and Local Businesses in Afghanistan

BAREEN Media – United Nations programmes to improve irrigation, make farmland safer and support local businesses in Kunduz are helping families and host communities strengthen their livelihoods and create new employment opportunities.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says the work includes small infrastructure projects, job opportunities and clearing farmland of explosive remnants, with support from Japan and cooperation with other UN agencies.

The programme is also improving irrigation systems and supporting local economic activities. UNDP says better access to agricultural water is helping farmers increase production and improve household incomes.

The UN says such support is becoming more important as large numbers of Afghans return from neighbouring countries, increasing pressure on jobs, services and local resources in provinces such as Kunduz.

UNDP says strengthening local infrastructure, creating jobs and making farmland safer can help returnee families and host communities rebuild their livelihoods and achieve greater stability.
