Taliban Remain Silent on World Teachers’ Day as Afghan Teachers Say Celebrations Were Banned
Bareen Media – World Teachers’ Day was observed around the world on October 5, but the Taliban did not publish an official message marking the occasion.
Teachers in Kabul, Balkh and Herat said Taliban authorities prevented schools from holding ceremonies or programs to honour teachers.
Some teachers said students had prepared small events to thank their teachers, but the plans were cancelled after instructions from Taliban education officials.
The restrictions come as UNESCO and other international organizations highlighted the vital role of teachers in shaping the future of education.
The situation comes as Afghan girls remain banned from education beyond Grade 6, making Afghanistan the only country in the world with such a nationwide restriction.
