Flávio Bolsonaro: Jair Bolsonaro’s Son Faces Test in Brazil’s Presidential Election
Flavio Bolsonaro, a senator and son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has entered Brazil’s presidential race while relying on his father’s political legacy. His contest with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is one of the central battles of the election.
According to Al Jazeera, Flavio entered the presidential race after his father was prevented from continuing his political career and running for office following his judicial conviction.
Flávio has sought to retain support among his father’s supporters while also attracting voters outside the Bolsonaro movement.
According to the report, his campaign has focused largely on issues including public security and combating organized crime.
Lula, Brazil’s incumbent president, is seeking another term in office, with the election taking place amid deep political polarization.
Reuters reported that recent polls show a close contest between Lula and Flavio. In a Datafolha poll, Lula received 48 percent and Flavio 45 percent in a potential second-round matchup.
Flavio’s campaign has also faced questions over allegations of corruption, an issue that has attracted renewed attention in the final days of the campaign.
The final televised debate between the leading candidates was not held. Lula did not participate, while Flavio withdrew before the programme began. Al Jazeera reported that the debate was subsequently cancelled.
Flavio Bolsonaro is making his first presidential run while seeking to maintain the political influence of his father’s movement, with polling showing a closely contested race ahead of the vote.
