King Charles’ Caribbean Visit Revives Debate Over Slavery Reparations
King Charles III’s upcoming visit to the Caribbean has renewed debate over Britain’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade and calls for reparations.
Sky News Arabia reported that King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to visit The Bahamas and Guyana before travelling to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth leaders’ meeting.
The visit comes as several Caribbean and African countries continue to call for measures to address the legacy of slavery and colonialism, including possible financial reparations.
According to Sky News Arabia, Buckingham Palace has said the King will not avoid discussions about Britain’s role in the slave trade, but he is not expected to issue a formal apology.
Reuters reported that the Commonwealth Secretary-General expects member states to make progress on discussions over slavery reparations.
