UN Warns Multiple Crises Are Increasing Crime and Instability Risks in Afghanistan

Bareen Media – The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says several overlapping crises in Afghanistan are increasing the risk of crime and further instability.

UNODC said restrictions on the rights of women and girls, the decline of the rural economy following reduced opium cultivation, and sharp cuts in humanitarian assistance are adding to people’s vulnerability.

The UN agency also identified the large-scale forced return of Afghans from neighbouring countries as another major pressure on the country.

UNODC warned that these combined challenges could increase crime and instability in Afghanistan and said addressing them is important not only for the country’s future, but also for regional and global security.
