UN Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Southern Afghanistan

The humanitarian situation in southern Afghanistan is deteriorating, with health facilities facing increasing pressure from patients suffering from severe malnutrition, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned.

OCHA said on Wednesday that healthcare centres across southern Afghanistan are experiencing overcrowding and a growing number of hospital admissions linked to severe malnutrition.

The agency said widespread poverty and hunger have further worsened living conditions for families, making it increasingly difficult for vulnerable communities to meet their basic needs.

OCHA also warned that Afghan families are confronting several overlapping crises at the same time as resources available for humanitarian assistance continue to decline.

Afghanistan has faced persistent humanitarian challenges in recent years, including widespread poverty, food insecurity, malnutrition, climate-related disasters, drought and devastating floods.

These crises have placed additional pressure on vulnerable households, particularly those already struggling to access food, healthcare, and other essential services.

The UN’s latest warning highlights the growing gap between humanitarian needs and the resources available to support millions of Afghans facing difficult living conditions.
