UN Renews Richard Bennett’s Mandate Amid Afghanistan’s Human Rights Crisis
Bareen Media – The UN Human Rights Council has extended the mandate of Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, for another year.
The decision was adopted without a vote during the Council’s session in Geneva, with Afghanistan’s representative, Nasir Ahmad Andisha, calling for continued international monitoring and accountability.
Bennett has repeatedly documented restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and girls, including limits on education, employment and public life.
The Taliban have criticized Bennett’s work and previously barred him from entering Afghanistan, accusing him of spreading what they described as false information.
Despite the restrictions, Bennett’s mandate remains a key UN mechanism for documenting human rights violations and reporting on the situation in Afghanistan.
