India’s Youth Protest Leader Released After Detention Over Election Dispute

Indian authorities have released Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party, a day after detaining him ahead of a protest in New Delhi demanding the resignation of the country’s chief election commissioner.

According to Reuters, Dipke was released by a court on Saturday after agreeing to conditions that his party’s legal affairs head did not disclose. Student activist Neha Bora, who was also detained during Friday’s protest, was released the same day.

The demonstrations are part of a wider campaign by student groups, opposition parties and youth activists challenging a revision of India’s electoral rolls. Protesters argue that the process unfairly removes voters and benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

More than 130 million voter names were removed during the revision, Reuters reported. India’s Election Commission has denied political bias, saying voters whose names were wrongly deleted can register again. The BJP has accused its opponents of undermining confidence in the electoral process.

Dipke’s movement has gained national attention through protests over political accountability and public institutions. The latest demonstrations have focused on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whose resignation protesters are demanding.

The detentions have raised renewed questions about the treatment of political demonstrators and the space available for peaceful protest in the world’s most populous country.
