UN Official Raises Afghan Girls’ Education with Taliban During Kabul Visit

Bareen Media: UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo has raised international concerns over the rights of Afghan women and girls, particularly girls’ access to education, during meetings with Taliban officials in Kabul.

DiCarlo concluded her two-day visit to Afghanistan on Monday after meeting Taliban authorities, civil society representatives, women leaders and female UN staff.

The UN said she stressed that progress on the rights of women and girls would contribute to Afghanistan’s development. She also raised restrictions affecting Afghan women working for the United Nations.

DiCarlo reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to continuing the Doha Process and said dialogue must produce more practical results for the Afghan people.

The UN official also discussed economic pressures, climate change, natural disasters and the return of Afghans from neighbouring countries.

During meetings with civil society representatives and women leaders, she highlighted their important role in Afghan society.

The visit comes as Afghan girls remain excluded from secondary and higher education under Taliban restrictions, making education one of the central issues in the UN’s engagement with the de facto authorities.

DiCarlo’s visit has also drawn criticism from some Afghan civil society figures and analysts, who question whether continued international engagement has produced meaningful changes in Taliban policies, particularly on women’s rights.

The UN, however, says it will continue engaging with the Taliban while pressing for progress on human rights and practical improvements for the Afghan people.
