Richard Bennett Calls for Accountability Over Civilian Casualties in Afghanistan

BAREEN Media – Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, has called for accountability over civilian casualties following a recent airstrike that he said appeared to have mainly affected children.

Bennett said that after such attacks, establishing responsibility and determining how the incident occurred is fundamental.

He said the incident may have resulted from negligence, failures, or other factors and stressed that it should be investigated.

The UN Special Rapporteur said there can be no justification for such irreversible harm to civilians.

According to Bennett, the attack appears to be inconsistent with human rights principles and international humanitarian law.

Bennett made the remarks in a post on his X account, emphasizing the need to hold those responsible accountable and protect civilians.
