Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has warned that Taliban policies have severely restricted or eliminated opportunities for young Afghans to pursue higher education, build careers, achieve financial independence, and participate in public life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at a United Nations meeting titled \u201c<\/em>Afghan Youth at a Crossroads: Rights, Aspirations, Challenges and Opportunities,\u201d Bennett said young Afghans continue to dream of studying, finding meaningful employment, supporting their families and contributing to their communities, but many of these opportunities have been taken away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, also warned that the country’s education system and employment opportunities for young people have been severely affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Faiq expressed concern that religious schools are increasingly replacing general education, while subjects such as foreign languages and civic education are being removed from the curriculum. He said Afghan youth need scientific knowledge, digital skills and critical thinking to participate in a rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The meeting also highlighted the devastating impact of restrictions on women and girls.
