Belgium has accused Israeli settlers of attacking Palestinians and a group of Western diplomats in the occupied West Bank, renewing concerns over the safety of civilians and international observers in the territory.

According to Reuters, Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said settlers targeted Palestinian residents and visiting diplomats. The reported incident involved representatives from several European countries, including Belgium, France and Poland.

The violence reportedly took place in Taybeh, a Palestinian Christian village, during the olive harvest season. A French mayor who was visiting the area also said he had been assaulted by masked settlers.

The incident follows other reported attacks against Palestinians and people documenting conditions in the West Bank. Violence during the olive harvest has repeatedly raised concerns among Palestinian communities, who depend on the season for both income and cultural tradition.

Prévot condemned the reported attacks and called for those responsible to be held accountable. Belgian officials also raised the possibility of seeking European Union sanctions against individuals involved in settler violence.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the perpetrators, while Israeli police said an investigation had been opened.

The incident has renewed calls for effective protection of Palestinian civilians, journalists, diplomats and other observers in the occupied West Bank, as concerns continue over accountability for settler attacks.
