Nearly 45 million children worldwide have been forced to leave their homes because of conflict, natural disasters and the climate crisis, highlighting the urgent need for stronger international efforts to protect children, the United Nations has warned.

Najaat Maalla M’jid, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, called for greater global action on Saturday, 17 October, to support children facing overlapping and recurring crises.

M’jid said rising food insecurity and the rapid expansion of new technologies were also making efforts to prevent and address violence against children increasingly challenging.

She stressed that stronger international cooperation and more effective child protection mechanisms were essential to tackling these growing threats.

Her remarks followed the presentation of her final report to the UN General Assembly. She described the report as a “wake-up call” for the international community to intensify efforts to safeguard children.

The report coincides with the 20th anniversary of the first UN global study on violence against children, which examined the scale of the problem and sought to raise international awareness of the need for stronger protection measures.

M’jid noted that, despite significant changes over the past two decades, the world continues to face complex and simultaneous crises in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Children remain among the groups most vulnerable to their devastating effects.

The UN warning underscores the need for coordinated global action to protect children from displacement, violence, food insecurity, and other threats to their safety and well-being.
