At least 37 journalists were detained while covering youth-led protests in India on October 10 and 11, prompting press freedom organisations to raise concerns about police treatment of media workers and restrictions on independent reporting.

According to Reuters, journalists covering demonstrations in New Delhi said police detained reporters, seized mobile phones and used force against some members of the media. The protests called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a disputed revision of voter lists.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said at least 37 journalists were detained across New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Pune. Some reporters alleged that officers assaulted them or attempted to make them delete footage recorded during the demonstrations.

India’s Supreme Court also became involved after lawyers sought protection for journalists and others carrying out their professional duties. Despite assurances that their work should not be obstructed, journalists reported further detentions.

The protests were sparked by allegations that a revision of electoral rolls had removed millions of eligible voters. India’s Election Commission and government have rejected claims that the process was politically motivated, saying the revision aims to remove duplicate and ineligible entries.
