Bareen Media – Millions of people in Afghanistan are expected to face severe food shortages this winter, as declining humanitarian assistance, unemployment and rising living costs deepen the country\u2019s hunger crisis, according to a new assessment by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The assessment, released on 13 October, projects that 19.2 million people, 38 per cent of Afghanistan\u2019s population, will experience crisis-level or worse food insecurity between November 2026 and April 2027. Around five million people are expected to face emergency levels of hunger, requiring urgent assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report also warns of worsening malnutrition among children. An estimated 4.04 million children aged six to 59 months will require treatment for acute malnutrition in 2027, with inadequate access to nutrition services increasing the risks for vulnerable families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in a joint statement published on 15 October, said high food and transport costs, limited employment opportunities and reduced humanitarian assistance were undermining families\u2019 ability to obtain sufficient food, despite improved agricultural production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Women and children remain particularly vulnerable as households struggle to afford nutritious meals and access essential services. Aid agencies have called for urgent funding to expand food assistance, emergency agricultural support, and malnutrition prevention and treatment ahead of winter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
