Hundreds of child marriages have been recorded in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg state, including cases involving Afghan girls as young as 12, raising concerns about child protection and forced marriage.

According to Euronews, authorities in Baden-Württemberg recorded 358 child-marriage cases, but only eight marriages were formally annulled through final court rulings. The cases included an Afghan girl aged 12 who married a 21-year-old Afghan man in 2023.

The report also highlights concerns about girls being pressured by family members into marriage, including during trips abroad. One girl, identified by the pseudonym Samira, said her family pressured her to marry a man she did not know while visiting Pakistan.

German authorities have also reported continued demand for support services for people facing forced marriage. A counselling centre dealing with forced marriage cases handled 271 cases in 2025, including 80 involving people at risk of forced marriage and 33 minors.

Forced marriage is a criminal offence in Germany, and marriage involving anyone under 18 is prohibited.

The findings highlight ongoing concerns about child marriage, coercion, and the need to strengthen protections for vulnerable girls.
