Her achievement also made her Afghanistan’s first female Asian Games medallist since 2002.

But behind the medal is a story of struggle, courage and determination. While still in Afghanistan, Hashimi had to wear men’s clothes to go cycling and attend training without being recognised.

She also hid her face, fearing that people might attack her if they discovered she was a woman riding a bicycle.

After the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Hashimi left Afghanistan and continued her sporting career in Italy with international support.

Today, she stands on an international podium representing Afghanistan, while many women and girls inside the country remain restricted from sport, education and public life.

For Afghan girls who have been denied the chance to study, compete and follow their dreams, Hashimi’s journey offers a powerful message: hope is still alive.

Her silver medal is therefore more than a sporting achievement. It is a reminder that Afghan women can overcome barriers, represent their country and inspire a new generation to keep dreaming.

Hashimi has said she hopes one day Afghan women will be able to compete in their own country without fear and that the next generation will not have to leave Afghanistan to pursue their dreams.

Bareen Media – The 20th Asian Games have ended in Japan, but for Afghanistan, the Games leave behind a powerful message of hope.
