Bareen Media – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says 69 percent of Afghan returnees aged 14 and above who took part in a survey had not worked during the 30 days before they were interviewed. The survey was conducted in August with 1,547 returnees.

According to the IOM’s findings, 54 percent of the individuals and families surveyed said their income was not enough to cover their basic needs. In addition, 53 percent of participants had not completed their education, while half had no specialised work experience.

The situation among young people was also reported as concerning. Fifty-five percent of returnees aged 15 to 26 were neither in education, employment nor skills training. Among young girls, the figure reached 79 percent.

IOM also reported housing problems, a lack of documentation and limited access to basic services among returnees. The United Nations has also said the large-scale return of Afghans from Iran and Pakistan has placed additional pressure on housing, employment and public services in Afghanistan.

IOM stressed that the survey covered only returnees included in the specific programme and that its findings should not be generalised to all Afghan returnees.
