Niger\u2019s Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine, says the country has evidence that he claims shows France and Ukraine have supported terrorist activities in the Sahel region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zeine said the situation in the Sahel is not simply an armed insurgency or a religious conflict. He claimed that there are efforts by foreign powers to regain influence in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also claimed that the natural resources of Sahel countries, including Niger\u2019s uranium, as well as gold, lithium, gas and oil, are among the main reasons for foreign powers\u2019 interest in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nigerien prime minister further accused France of seeking to undermine regional stability and said Paris was cooperating with Ukraine in this regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These allegations come as Nigerien officials have previously accused Western countries of supporting armed groups in the region. The allegations require independent verification and have been disputed or denied by the parties accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have reduced their relations with several Western countries and regional organizations since military governments came to power in the three countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The three countries formed the Alliance of Sahel States in 2023, and the cooperation was expanded into a confederation in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The three countries have also established a joint force to strengthen security, economic and political cooperation and are pursuing joint initiatives in areas including media, banking and transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
