France Braces for New Wave of Protests as Macron Calls for Calm
Bareen Media – France is preparing for widespread protests as rising living costs and concerns over public services fuel growing discontent across the country.
Thousands of people were expected to take to the streets on Saturday, 17 October, with the Yellow Vest movement and student groups helping mobilise demonstrators.
Protesters are demanding stronger measures to address inflation and rising living costs, alongside greater investment in public services, particularly education.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for calm ahead of the demonstrations, stressing that the right to protest must be accompanied by respect for others and the protection of public property.
Meanwhile, French security officials have raised concerns about the scale of the planned protests and the possibility of clashes in Paris and other major cities. Organisers have announced hundreds of planned demonstrations across the country, while Paris police have imposed restrictions on rallies in parts of the capital.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has also ordered the establishment of a crisis centre to monitor developments amid fears that tensions could escalate.
The demonstrations come as the French government seeks parliamentary approval for an austerity budget, while opponents are calling for greater economic support and increased spending on public services.
At the same time, criticism of police handling of student protests has intensified. Previous demonstrations have resulted in injuries and thousands of arrests, adding to tensions between protesters and the authorities.
