Iran Insists on Diplomacy After Trump Rejects Hormuz Proposal

Iran says diplomacy remains the only way to resolve its conflict with the United States and Israel after US President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the fighting.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s conditions for reopening the strategic waterway are clear and that any move to reopen it depends on those conditions being met.

Iran had presented its proposal during the UN General Assembly in New York and sent it to Washington through Qatari mediators. Tehran said the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within seven days if the proposed conditions were met.

Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected the proposal, arguing that Iran was seeking an immediate agreement to reopen the strait because of the pressure it is facing.

Araghchi said, however, that mediators had not yet formally informed Tehran of a US rejection. He said Iran was waiting for Washington’s official position before deciding its next step.
