Australian MP Helen Haines Loses Leg After Alleged Car Attack Outside Electoral Office
Australian MP Helen Haines has lost a leg after being hit by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria, according to Australian media reports.
Haines, 65, who has represented the federal electorate of Indi since 2019, suffered critical injuries in the incident on Monday afternoon. She was taken to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, where she underwent surgery.
According to Australian media, a white Toyota Land Cruiser hit Haines and pinned her between two vehicles. A 43-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene, while a resident helped stop him before police arrived.
The incident has prompted a response from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described the attack as deliberate and called for an end to violence in political debate.
Police and national security agencies are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not yet publicly established why Haines was targeted.
Haines is an independent member of parliament known for her work on regional issues and government accountability.
