Student Protests Spread Across France as Political Tensions Rise

Bareen Media – Student protests demanding more resources for education have spread across France, triggering a growing political dispute between Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and opposition leader Jean Luc Mélenchon, France 24 reported.

The protests began in the Paris region over concerns including overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages and poor school conditions. Demonstrations have since expanded to other parts of the country.

Police arrested dozens of people during clashes and disturbances linked to some protests. In the Alpes Maritimes region alone, 10 high school students were detained Monday over allegations involving fires and projectiles.

Lecornu has called for protesters and political leaders to avoid violence and said students and school staff must be protected. Mélenchon has defended the demonstrations and accused the government of responding with excessive force.

The protests are unfolding as France approaches its 2027 presidential election, adding a new issue to an already tense political environment.
