Karzai Says Afghans Proudly Recognise Women’s Achievements at Home and Abroad
Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called for the reopening of schools and universities to girls, saying Afghanistan’s development depends on empowering girls and ensuring their access to education.
In a statement on Sunday marking the International Day of the Girl, Karzai said every effort should be made to ensure girls receive educational opportunities alongside boys and can contribute to their country through knowledge and professional skills.
He said Afghans take pride in recognising the achievements, courage and contributions of women and girls at national and international forums.
The Taliban have barred girls from attending school beyond Grade 6 since 2021 and prohibited women from attending universities since December 2022. The restrictions have deprived millions of Afghan girls and women of educational opportunities.
