India Marks Gandhi’s 157th Birth Anniversary
Bareen Media – India is marking Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary on October 2 with commemorative events, prayer gatherings, and public programmes celebrating his commitment to truth and non-violent resistance.
National leaders paid tribute to Gandhi at Raj Ghat in New Delhi, where his memorial is located. Across the country, schools, colleges and government institutions have also organized events highlighting his life and ideas.
Gandhi became internationally known for using peaceful protest, civil disobedience and mass mobilization during India’s struggle against British rule. His approach later influenced civil-rights and social movements in different parts of the world.
The legacy of non-violent resistance also has a strong connection to Afghanistan’s history through Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, the Pashtun leader who organized the Khudai Khidmatgar movement and advocated non-violent resistance.
October 2 is also observed internationally as a day dedicated to the principles of non-violence and peaceful conflict resolution.
