Christchurch Heritage Festival Celebrates New Zealand’s History Through Art and Community
A heritage festival in Christchurch is bringing together history, architecture and community activities, inviting residents and visitors to explore the stories that have shaped the New Zealand city.
The Christchurch Heritage Festival 2026 runs from 16 to 26 October, with events hosted at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre and other locations across the city. This year’s theme, “Building Place, Connections,” explores how changes in infrastructure, communication and community relationships have shaped Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region.
According to The Arts Centre, the programme includes guided heritage walks, exhibitions, creative workshops and family activities designed to connect people with the city’s past.
Activities include a guided walk exploring the site’s Gothic Revival architecture, tours of the historic Observatory Tower and outdoor games inspired by the 1800s. Visitors can also take part in creative sketching activities celebrating the city’s historic buildings.
The festival highlights the role of cultural heritage in preserving local identity while helping communities understand how their surroundings have evolved. By bringing historical sites and stories into public activities, organisers aim to make heritage accessible to people of different ages and backgrounds.
The programme continues until 26 October, offering opportunities to discover Christchurch’s architectural landmarks, local history and cultural connections.
