UNAMA Calls for Protection of Afghan Girls’ Rights on the International Day of the Girl
Bareen Media: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says millions of Afghan girls continue to face poverty, early marriage, limited access to education, and illiteracy.
In a statement marking the International Day of the Girl on Sunday, UNAMA said every girl has the right to education, personal development and the opportunity to build her own future.
The mission said education is one of the most effective ways to develop girls’ abilities and help them reach their potential. It added that Afghan girls have been denied access to education beyond primary school for five years.
UNAMA called for practical measures to protect Afghan girls’ rights, including access to education, decent work, personal choice and the opportunity to shape their futures according to their own aspirations.
The United Nations observes October 11 as the International Day of the Girl to promote girls’ rights and highlight the challenges they face around the world.
