Adelaide Unveils Permanent Artwork Honouring Afghan Women and Girls

Bareen Media – A permanent mosaic artwork in Adelaide is drawing attention to the experiences of Afghan women and girls under Taliban rule while bringing together artists and community members from Australia and around the world.

The “Hanging by a Thread” installation was unveiled on Blight Street in Ridleyton and features mosaic panels inspired by Afghan clothing, embroidery and cultural traditions. More than 1,200 mosaic artists from 46 countries have contributed to the international project.

The Adelaide installation involved about 120 local community members. Afghan Women Federation of South Australia president Behishta Anwar said the project is personally meaningful and helps keep the experiences of Afghan women and girls visible.

The Australian and New Zealand contribution includes more than 420 mosaic sections, with the Adelaide artwork permanently displayed on nine Stobie poles along Blight Street.

Organisers say the project uses art and cultural heritage to connect communities and express solidarity with Afghan women and girls whose rights and freedoms have been severely restricted.
