Evicted 87-Year-Old Madrid Woman Wins Right to Return Home After Nationwide Protests

Bareen Media – An 87 year old woman evicted from her Madrid home after living there for seven decades will be allowed to return following an agreement with the property owners, her lawyer said.

Maricarmen Abascal was removed from her apartment on a stretcher last week, triggering protests across Spain over rising rents, tenant protections and the country’s growing housing shortage.

Under the agreement, Abascal will return to the apartment in Madrid’s Retiro district after leaving hospital and will pay a rent similar to what she had previously paid.

The case has become a focus of wider protests, with thousands demonstrating and protesters setting up a camp in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol demanding stronger protections for tenants and action on housing affordability.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has also called for new government measures to address Spain’s housing crisis, including proposals to strengthen protections for tenants.
