Brazil’s Electoral Court Orders Meta to Ensure Equal Treatment of Presidential Candidates
Brazil’s top electoral court has ordered Meta to ensure equal treatment of presidential candidates Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of the country’s October 25 runoff election.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the order followed allegations that Meta’s platforms treated political content associated with the two candidates differently. The court directed the company to apply consistent standards to political posts, search visibility, and its artificial intelligence tools.
The complaint raised concerns about differences in the visibility of content supporting the candidates, including responses generated by Meta’s AI tools. Meta has denied deliberately favouring either candidate.
The ruling highlights growing scrutiny of social media companies’ influence on election campaigns and the role of artificial intelligence in shaping political information online.
