Flávio Bolsonaro Leads Lula in Brazil’s Closest First-Round Presidential Race
Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s first-round presidential election, according to official results reported by Brazilian media.
Flávio received 47.03% of valid votes, compared with 45.16% for Lula, a gap of 1.87 percentage points.
Brazilian media described the result as the closest first-round presidential race since the country’s return to direct presidential elections in 1989.
Neither candidate secured more than half of the valid votes, sending the election to a runoff on October 25.
Flávio Bolsonaro and Lula will now compete directly for the presidency in the second round.
